Regional Health Plan

Public Health relates to all aspects of community health and well-being and includes promoting a healthy lifestyle (physical activity, healthy eating, tobacco and alcohol use etc), contributing to the prevention of disease and injury and responding to social, economic and environmental factors that could impact on people’s health (e.g. social inclusion, education, access to open space, transport, pollution, water quality).

The South Australian Public Health Act 2011, replacing the old Public & Environmental health Act, 1987 requires Public Health Planning by Councils for the first time

The Act allows Councils to undertake planning regionally, in recognition that many Public Health matters extend across Council boundaries and Yankalilla Council made the decision to undertake planning as a region of local governments that are already grouped together due to geographical location and similarities which include:

  • the City of Victor Harbor,
  • Alexandrina Council,
  • Kangaroo Island Council,
  • District Council of Mount Barker, and
  • Adelaide Hills Council.

The State Public Health Plan recognises that achieving public health ‘is a result of more than just luck, personal choices and individual lifestyles or behaviours. It has much to do with what kind of start we have in life, what kinds of neighbourhoods and communities we live  in, what education and job opportunities we have and how connected we are to other people.’ ‘It also has much to do with how good our access is to basic things in life such as clean water, clean air, good housing, good and safe food, safe disposal or recycling of waste and opportunities to be active; as well as effective prevention, management and control of serious communicable and non-communicable  diseases.’

This report highlights some of the key successes to date by Yankalilla Council against the aims and objectives of our regional plan over the last two years.
